Newcomer Brian Anthony gets an “A” for effort on his debut single “The Thunder.” The songwriting is very straightforward and concise. A tale of rejection and betrayal involving a malevolent lover is what listeners hear, if they can stand it. Anthony bares it all with the unfinished, stripped down production, and unrefined singing. With all of that taken into consideration he still manages to showcase a unique confidence. Aside from his confidence and evidently his risk taking ability, Anthony knows how to wrap up a narrative with complimenting visuals.

The music video to the single is everything one might expect after the audio experience. Anthony is able to extract the Noir elements from the story and transform sound to sight. The lighting is such that Anthony’s face is barely visible, but just enough so that you can make out a figure. This concept fits nicely with the story telling about the shady femme fatale he sings about. She’s a shadowy character that constantly changes form to take advantage of those who have surrendered their love to her.  Anthony’s presentation has a place in the world of abstractionism and experimentation, no art is bad art. For those forward thinking minds  with mature pineal  glands, there’s much to take away from Anthony’s  work.  The excitement is that he’s just getting started and with such ambition put forth into this one project, it’s a given that the next time around will be astounding.

Born and raised in the birthplace of Funk, and arguably the birthplace of Rock n’ Roll, music is in my veins. If names like Bootsy Collins, and the Ohio Players ring a bell, then you know where I come from. As a musician and poet myself, I have an appreciation for art that hasn’t been inundated by the agendas of major labels and networks.
