Critique: Katt Rockell’s latest mixtape is a  four track sampler that  includes Katt’s own interpretation of popular Maybach classics. What’s most important of course is how well Katt delivers this soul filled package, and without a doubt she sings on as if she was in the studio for her debut LP. The opening track “You” gives listeners a softer side of the otherwise hardcore gangsta based premise of Maybach.

One aspect of Katt’s talents that stands out is her ability to deliver catchy hooks. Not only is this the case on “You,” but also on “Get Enough,” and “What About us.” Katt provides a street hustlas’ twist to love on “Get Enough” and “Red Lights.” The versatile songwriter  accentuates the 70’s vibes on “Get Enough” through her singing style. “Red Lights” offers the same kind of  “thug lovin'” feel, but with a classy approach. Lines such as “I will light up your cigar, pour your drink, and kiss your scars” are provocative yet posh.  “What About Us” closes the EP with Katt’s wavy satin silky voice playing along with the elegant string arrangement on Rick Ross’ “Cigar Music.”

Born and raised in the birthplace of Funk, and arguably the birthplace of Rock n’ Roll, music is in my veins. If names like Bootsy Collins, and the Ohio Players ring a bell, then you know where I come from. As a musician and poet myself, I have an appreciation for art that hasn’t been inundated by the agendas of major labels and networks. Recently I’ve been sharing music and connecting with artists via social media. Follow me on Instagram @mainstream_music_isgarbage.
